Movie: Friday at Hollywood Recreation Center

This event is being described by Grand Performances as something that fuses hula, opera, electronica, and musical theater. That seems like something worth checking out, especially since it’s totally and completely FREE. Show starts at 8 pm.

Other: Chinatown Summer Nights in Chinatown
Just in case you missed it last time, Chinatown Summer Nights is back! Starts at 5 pm, goes until midnight, with FREE entry. Summer Nights features all kinds of goodness like an LA Weekly music stage, a craft beer garden, food trucks (duh), arts and crafts, and our favorite addition, a soup eating contest.

SUNDAY

Movie: Casablanca at Beverly Canon Gardens
Spend Sunday night in Hollywood Style with a free screening of Casablanca in the heart of Beverly Hills. Movie features vampires, werewolves, Abraham Lincoln, and a cameo by Val Kilmer. Just kidding, but it does have a plot (although “Play it again, Sam” is never said). Movie starts at 8 pm.

Music: Geographer at Levitt Pavilion
Nintendo meets electronic meets gorgeous vocals with Geographer, who play catchy indie tunes. They put on a great show presented by Spaceland, and it’s totally FREE.

Other: Watermelon Festival at Sunland Recreation Center
The Watermelon Festival features a beer garden, carnival rides, arcade games, and plenty of watermelon themed entertaiment, such as a Seed Spitting Contest, Watermelon Eating Contest, and carvings. Watermelon is free all day, and entry is $5.
