Movie: Oh Brother, Where Art Thou at the New Beverly

Coen. Clooney. Classic. This Friday, do your old high school lit teacher right (the one that taught you the Odyssey with the crazy costume jewelry) and check out the fantastic O Brother, Where Art Thou at the New Beverly. Go travel to the deep south, you know, without actually traveling to the deep south (phew!). Movie at 9:20pm, tickets are $8.

Do you like catchy music, or just good music in general? This weekend, Dante Vs. Zombies, praised as the “surreal outlaws of the live sing-n-dance along” play with Wounded Lion, The Dagons, and Hallucinations. Doors at 8:30pm, show at $8.

Jim Carrey loves the crap out of Christmas, which is great, because we love the crap out of Jim Carrey. Check out this ultra high budget Robert Zemeckis flick on the best budget possible: FREE. The film starts at 10am, and is a pleasant post-breakfast, pre-Pasadena shopping spree start to your day.

Music: 1st Annual XMas Fest at Echo Park Outpost

Two stages made up of indie locals jamming out to Christmas classics or original Christmas songs make a great pick for Saturday night, especially when there’s an old fashioned Santa photo booth,  mall style. The day turned into night starts at midnight and runs until 3pm, featuring the likes of Gothic Tropic, LA Font, Races, and more than twenty others. It features holiday go-go dancers, a vinyl booth, and a holiday bar. $15 at the door to watch a bunch of musicians try their hand at being Santa.

Other: Gifted: A Holiday Market for Uncommon Goods at Santa Monica Pier

For one of the first times ever, you can buy something that’s not a Santa Monica snow globe or decorative paperweight (those things will just crack your iPad screen) on a pier. This weekend, checkout SM Pier’s “Cure for the Common Gift” craftaganza with unique clothing, artisan foods, beauty products, paper and home goods, a free vintage photo booth, free crafting workshops, and a DIY wrapping station. For that last minute Etsy clad friend or just a little beachy self gifting, shop till you drop next to the ocean with a sweet admission price of FREE from noon to 8pm.

Austin bred Scott H. Bivram, bluegrass extraordinaire, will serenade you with vintage guitars and a stomp board of his own creation to music described by the Satellite as “the rusty scrapings of resin that have come from modern times having it’s way with old time blues, country, and bluegrass roots music.” Doors at 8:30pm, Show at 9pm, Tix are 12 (dollars).
