High Five Group Show @ New Image Art Gallery – 1 pm/FREE

No word on whether or not it was actually high-ness that turned five into six, or which of the half-dozen artists in “High Five,” opening this weekend at edgy urban-visuals emporium New Image Art, tipped the scale by being just too good to stay home. But this group of dynamic and diverse artists and their offerings in painted canvas, paper and photographic installation belong together, so who cares about the math! The show features work ranging from Curtis Kulig’s calligraphic, Twombly-esque “Love Me” paintings to Deanna Templeton’s quirky and sometimes unsettling documentary photography. It includes approaches to paintings ranging from Maya Hayuk’s and Alia Penner’s (pictured) geometric, op-art abstractions to Vanessa Prager’s postmodern, folksy but eerie portraiture and Ashley Macomber’s edgy, illustrative romanticism. It may not seem obvious at first what connects all these revved-up visions of the world, but a closer look reveals how they all share a certain elegance in design, an affection for diligently composed patterns and a restrained emotional intensity belied by their own aggressive beauty. New Image Art, 7920 Santa Monica Blvd., W. Hlywd.; Sat., April 21, 6-9 p.m.; exhibition runs Tues.-Sat., 1-6 p.m., thru May 26; free.
