FRIDAY Movie: West Side Story in 70mm at the Egyptian We recommend starting your weekend at the Egyptian for a 70mm print of WSS, which was around way before Glee. Musical theater badassery at its finest starts at 7:30pm in Leonard Bernstein/Steven Sondheim wonderfulness. 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA 90028 When you’re a Jet Music: Santa, Snow, and Live Holiday Music at Two Rodeo Need a taste of the holidays just after work? Are you so tired of suiting up and you just want to kick back and drink some cocoa? This is Beverly Hills, so you should probably leave your suit on, but you can check out some free holiday music/shopping/Christmas decor Rodeo style as you window shop your heart out. FREE to listen to the music, but the clothes cost more money than we’ll ever know. N. Rodeo Drive & Dayton Way, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 Other: Eagle Rock Comedy Festival in Eagle Rock Score some laughs in Eagle Rock this weekend at the third annual Eagle Rock Comedy Festival featuring over 175 stand-up comedians and sketch groups. There are oh so many shows to choose from, so grab a beer or just go old school and feel like you’re in a Colorado coffee shop sipping a chai and hearing some jokes from local comics, mostly for FREE! Here’s a line-up, but not the kind outside of Greystone Manor SATURDAY Movie: Quartet, Dustin Hoffman in Person at the Landmark This weekend you can see Dustin Hoffman (and his directorial debut about ageing) at the Nuart. We know you’re all like “where’s Betty White for this business,” but an elderly diva opera singer sounds pretty appropriate for the holidays after a few Mistletoe martinis. You’ll want to catch the 7:20pm show, because Dustin will be around for a Q & A afterwards (and please, no Mrs. Robinson jokes, guys). Tickets will cost you thirteen dollars. The new Mrs. Robinson* *Alright. Just one. 10850 West Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064 Music: Futra One Year Anniversary at Undisclosed Gallery Nothing says Saturday night like a music and art brand’s one year anniversary at an undisclosed downtown location. Ok, we confess, we’ll go anywhere with an undisclosed downtown location. This weekend, the “multimedia experience” Futra will be hosting their one year celebration in a place where all types of arts collide including music, artists, designers, visuals, and performance art. Yep, performance art. $10 with RSVP gets you an open bar from 8pm-10pm so get there early and consider it happy hour. RSVP and stuff We couldn’t even tell you where this one will be. Probably a warehouse somewhere. Other: Marina Del Rey Boat Parade in Marina Del Rey This weekend is filled with fireworks and boat parades galore, but Marina Del Rey is bound to be a sparkling good time that’s only a hop skip and a jump away from LA. If you think the boats in MDR are dreamy on their own, just imagine them draped in Christmas lights and gaudy holiday decor as you find yourself dreaming of a White Christmas amongst the backdrop of palm trees. The fireworks commence the parade at 5:55pm, and it’s totally and completely FREE. Here’s where it all goes down SUNDAY Movie: Home Alone at Electric Dust Drive-In DTLA’s new drive-in addition (or rather, swap) is screening Home Alone on Sunday night as a way to ease you into the constant weekend that is Christmas vacation (or Christmas month … Does anyone really work in December?). Enjoy a steamy hot cocoa, or Yoo-hoo if that’s your style, amidst the twinkling lights of downtown as you watch everyone’s favorite little Party Monster try to escape some wildly inadequate burglars, all in the spirit of whatever holiday it is you celebrate. Movie starts at 7:30pm, and you can park or sit on the fake grass. Hope you like a Mac 240 W 4th St, Los Angeles, CA 90013 Music: Live Score Set to The Cabinet of Dr. Calgiri at Pehrspace This Saturday night, we don’t really know what to expect over at Pehrspace. All we can gather is that Ezra Buchla and members of Dream Panther are going to score the fantastic 1920 German silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Calgiri right before your eyes. The screening and live scoring begin at 8pm, doors are $5. 325 Glendale Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90026 Other: Renegade Craft Fair in Historic Park Something about the word “renegade” drives us wild, and when thrown into mix with the word “crafts”, we’re just about as excited as the Sunday morning brunch crowd anywhere on Third Street. If you mixed last weekend’s installment of Unique LA, never fear. If you’re the DIY, Etsy type that loves giving out handcrafted holiday gifts or you’re just sick and tired of getting last pick at TJ Maxx Home Goods and World Market, then you’re just in luck. Indie crafters, hands-on workshops, sweet and savory eats, a free to use photobooth, and an animal rescue booth will get you just in the right mood to fork out the cash. Runs from 10am-5pm and it’s free entry! Because renegades don’t pay for stuff. Or you. When you’re renegading. 1245 N Spring St Los Angeles, CA 90012

Music: Live Score Set to The Cabinet of Dr. Calgiri at Pehrspace

This Saturday night, we don’t really know what to expect over at Pehrspace. All we can gather is that Ezra Buchla and members of Dream Panther are going to score the fantastic 1920 German silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Calgiri right before your eyes. The screening and live scoring begin at 8pm, doors are $5.

325 Glendale Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90026

Other: Renegade Craft Fair in Historic Park

Something about the word “renegade” drives us wild, and when thrown into mix with the word “crafts”, we’re just about as excited as the Sunday morning brunch crowd anywhere on Third Street.

FRIDAY Movie: Arthur Christmas at the Grove We know that your Friday nights are generally reserved for the likes of Godard … or, you know … Twilight. But why not bring in some (FREE) holiday wonder at the most magical place on earth (well, besides Disneyland, that is). Street Food Cinema is back for a special holiday screening of Arthur Christmas this Friday. Canoodle with a loved one near the Grove’s ornate Christmas castle, and cozy-up underneath the holiday lights. And if the date goes well, you can even plan what your future children would like (that was a subtle warning that there might be a lot of children there). The evening kicks off at 5pm with music by Sun Kings, and the film starts at 7pm. Treat yourself to gourmet movie munchies a la Dylan’s Candy Bar or a hot cocoa before making your way over to Tim Allen’s greatest nightmare. 189 The Grove Drive Los Angeles, CA 90036 Go red and go green here Music: Lianne La Havas at the Roxy If you like to bring in your Friday with song, bring it in right with London bred funk soul songstress Lianna La Havas and special guest Van Hunt. We’ve heard she puts on an amazing show, and Bon Iver agrees. Tickets are $17.50 with doors at 8pm, though you may need to kick it old school and call the box office. 9009 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 Box office: 310.278.9457 Other: The Night Sky Show at Santa Monica College Get intergalactic with an amazing excuse for you to bust out the Coldplay quotes this weekend at SMC’s the Night Sky Show, featuring a Digistar II Planeterium projector (yeah, we totally know what that means) that’ll make you feel as if you were looking at the night sky in your backyard of some small town where you can really see the night sky. The show starts at 7pm and will only set you back for five dollars. It also allows for news developments in space exploration and astronomy and plenty of time for you to ask questions. So go out. Learn something. Look at the stars. See how they shine for you. 1900 Pico Boulevard Santa Monica, CA 90405 SATURDAY Movie: Rob Schrab’s Birthday Found Crap at Cinefamily Come celebrate comedy writer it-boy Rob Schrab’s birthday at Cinefamily this weekend in a birthday bash filled with drinking, Rob Schrab, and Dan Harmon, creator of Community. Schrab and Harmon will provide clever commentary on terrible found footage while you drink yourself into merriment in a weirdly perfect birthday extravaganza that starts at 7pm. 611 N. Maybe you’ll like that they’re performed by members of Weezer, Yes, Incubus, and the Rentals as a tribute to Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Yes. Or maybe you’re like us and just super excited to support the folks over at 826LA in a music based fundraiser that’ll make for a fun cheap date. That’s right, reading is cool. Magnetic explores the science and art of connection through use of illuminated and interactive art, kinetic art, interactive video, light sculptures, and music. Let’s put it this way – your cat would love this stuff, and we’re sure you will too! $15 at the door for you pre-9pm early birds, butcover rises to $20 after 9pm. 613 Imperial Street, Los Angeles, CA 90021 SUNDAY Movie: The Comedy at the Downtown Independent The Comedy is a not comedy, in fact, the only joke is probably the title itself (fooled ya!). It’s more of a brooding hipster drama from what we can tell, starring Tim Heidecker of the Tim and Eric Awesome Show. We’re guessing it’s sort of like an Adam Scott movie only if Adam Scott was replaced with Tim Heidecker. Having said that, it looks like a pretty good film, and we’re very curious to check out this 11pm screening. 251 South Main Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 Comedy right here Music: The Faint at the Fonda Pretend that the weekend isn’t over yet with drinks and the Faint on Sunday night at the Fonda, where they’ll play alongside Trust and Casket Girls, shortly after the reissue of their 2001 favorite Danse Macabre. And did you know you can tour it every third Sunday? The barn is operated by the Carolwood foundation from 11am to 3pm and admission is free with suggested donation, so it’s a perfect journey into the history of magic before your observatory hike or a scone at Trails Cafe. You can even check out the space where Walt would get inspired for his movies … or you know, giant theme parks. 5202 Zoo Dr, Los Angeles, California 90027

FRIDAY Movie: Wrong at AFI Fest If you have a totally insane Netflix que like we do (Mad Men/90s movie with Brittany Murphy/obscure French film) then you may have seen Quentin Dupieux’s film Rubber, where a tire is the protag. Wrong is a surrealistic quest about a man’s journey to reunite with his dog that is supposed to create an absurd world unlike one you’ve ever experienced in, as AFI describes it, a “dizzying absurdist canvas you won’t forget”. We get the feeling-off its mixed reviews-that it’s one of those love em’ or hate em’ movies that we usually love (but sometimes, you know, hate). The weirdness begins at 9:15 pm. Get free tickets to this this Magic Eye for Adults right here 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA Music: Downtown Dia de Los Muertos at Grand Park If you still haven’t gotten in your Dia de Los Muertos fix, head over to Grand Park tonight, which is looking really lovely and romantic if you haven’t seen it lately. Punk mariachi favorites (yep!) Mariachi El Bronx are slated to perform along with Buyepongo, Trio Ellas, and others in a night of food trucks, boozing, and face painting. Festivities kick off at 5 pm and run until 11 pm, and the best part is, it’s totally gratis (that means FREE). 210 N Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Other: Mike Birbiglia at Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks We know, you’re freaking out. Thousand Oaks is so far out of LA. But Mike Birbiglia’s character in Mike Birglia’s movie about Mike Birbiglia (it’s called Sleepwalk with Me, and it’s kind of a big deal) loves the crap out of driving, so it’s all the more fitting that you can drive to see him. The show begins at 8 pm in a theatre you’ve probably never been to and tickets start at $20 (plus that nasty fee), but you’ve come to see some pretty endearing, always relatable, comedy from the fantastic … Well, you know his name by now. Go (bir)big or go home 2100 E. Thousand Oaks, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 SATURDAY Movie: A Tribute to Kim Ki-Duk at Cinefamily A Tribute to Kim Ki-Duk is a tribute to the winner of the highest prizes at the Berlin, Venice and Cannes Film Festivals. The South Korean filmmaker has achieved cinematic awards while being shunned in his home country of South Korea. He began his artistic career when he dropped out of the South Korean military to become a painter in France. The event includes a rare appearance by Kim Ki-Duk along with a screening of his film Time. Tickets for the 6:30pm show 611 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA Music: Cello Madness at Silverlake Lounge Feel classy like a rich person on the budget of a twenty-something (we sort of just assume that rich people listen to classical music). Check out a ton of free cello music on Saturday starting at 6 pm at Silverlake Lounge (we know, you so did this last week). The fun kicks off with happy hour drink specials and feature chamber music for cello, a film composer, and more. So go support some cellists and get your dose of culture (no, it’s not a gateway drug) for FREE. 2906 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026 Other: Independent Label Market at Micheltorena Street Elementary School A free lesson in indie music is headed your way this weekend with the Independent Label Market in Silverlake, where fresh vinyl is sold directly from the labels to the public. It’s like the farmer’s market of indie rock, only we’re betting people will look really really cool without trying. The event that started in London is experiencing its second run in LA, and will be filled with artist performances, exclusive releases, and absolutely no MP3s (don’t even ask). Plus, it’s totally FREE. Whether you have a record player or not, it’s a great chance to meet local musicians, discover new tracks, meet a date for the night, or buy records for your Pinterest projects. 1511 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026 SUNDAY Movie: Shorts Program 3 at AFI Fest Do you like films? What about short ones? We know, we’ve been scared by watching a thirty minute “masterpiece” of a white wall for thirty minutes that’s supposed to represent inner turmoil too. But this is AFI Fest. They’re classy and stuff, and the films here are really, really top notch. If there’s a white wall, it’s going to mean something. Why not support new filmmakers and check out Shorts Block Three this Sunday at 9:30. We’re pretty sure you won’t regret it, but even if you do, the films are really, well, short. James Cameron’s least favorite form (short and FREE!) here 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA Music: Divine Fits with Cold Cave at the Fonda Get yourself to the Fonda on Sunday’s eve for Divine Fits, a trio comprised of Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner, and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks. That’s right, we just name dropped on you. If that wasn’t enough for you, they’ll be accompanied by loving, brooding, synths of Cold Cave. The show starts at 8 pm, and tickets start at twenty bucks. Have a fit. That’s right, throw one 6126 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028 Other: Patchwork Indie Art and Crafts Festival at Helms Bakery Support local artists (and patchwork-ists) at Helms Bakery this weekend and celebrate the holidays early with the Patchwork Indie Arts and Crafts festival in Culver City. Listen to tunes, check out handbags, accessories, art, home goods, crochet and knit goods, and other stuff that takes money from the “Etsy” portion of your budget and get holiday gift shopping done early (parents in other states seem really enthused about the whole “local artist thing” and will sometimes mention they read a news article on it). Have fun in the sun, we’ve heard shopping is good for the soul. Or maybe we just came up with that. 8758 Venice Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90034

SATURDAY

Movie: A Tribute to Kim Ki-Duk at Cinefamily

A Tribute to Kim Ki-Duk is a tribute to the winner of the highest prizes at the Berlin, Venice and Cannes Film Festivals. The South Korean filmmaker has achieved cinematic awards while being shunned in his home country of South Korea. He began his artistic career when he dropped out of the South Korean military to become a painter in France. The event includes a rare appearance by Kim Ki-Duk along with a screening of his film Time.

Tickets for the 6:30pm show

611 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA

Music: Cello Madness at Silverlake Lounge

Feel classy like a rich person on the budget of a twenty-something (we sort of just assume that rich people listen to classical music).

2906 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026

Other: Independent Label Market at Micheltorena Street Elementary School

A free lesson in indie music is headed your way this weekend with the Independent Label Market in Silverlake, where fresh vinyl is sold directly from the labels to the public.

1511 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026

SUNDAY

Movie: Shorts Program 3 at AFI Fest

Do you like films? What about short ones? We know, we’ve been scared by watching a thirty minute “masterpiece” of a white wall for thirty minutes that’s supposed to represent inner turmoil too. But this is AFI Fest. They’re classy and stuff, and the films here are really, really top notch. If there’s a white wall, it’s going to mean something. Why not support new filmmakers and check out Shorts Block Three this Sunday at 9:30. We’re pretty sure you won’t regret it, but even if you do, the films are really, well, short.

James Cameron’s least favorite form (short and FREE!) here

6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA

Music: Divine Fits with Cold Cave at the Fonda

Get yourself to the Fonda on Sunday’s eve for Divine Fits, a trio comprised of Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner, and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks. That’s right, we just name dropped on you. If that wasn’t enough for you, they’ll be accompanied by loving, brooding, synths of Cold Cave. The show starts at 8 pm, and tickets start at twenty bucks.

Have a fit. That’s right, throw one

6126 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028

Other: Patchwork Indie Art and Crafts Festival at Helms Bakery

Support local artists (and patchwork-ists) at Helms Bakery this weekend and celebrate the holidays early with the Patchwork Indie Arts and Crafts festival in Culver City.

It’s time to get into Halloween-y! If you’re in for more scares or dares, go no further than our complete guide to Halloween in LA right here FRIDAY: Movie: Are You Afraid of the Everything is at Cinefamily Ghostly nostalgia ensues at this Halloween warm-up that Cinefamily is hosting, featuring TV shows from the 90s, a time well before Kenan Thompson and SNL made acquaintance. Go Good Burger with a photo booth, S’more bar, dank drinks, a campfire, and a festival of activities in this $12 time machine that starts at 7:30pm. Enter the Secret World of Alex (fill in the blank) 611 North Fairfax Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90036 Music: M83 DJ set at Lure Ok, so we’re not really the clubbing type, but we can dance in our Forever 21 short shorts just like the rest of them. The Fidlar show at the Echo is sold out, and an M83 DJ set for under $30 sounds like a sorta fun intro into Halloween weekend after a few drinks (maybe start classy at Piano Bar, then get messy?). 1439 Ivar Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028 Pretend you’re 18, do the Hollywood thing Other: Theatre in the Dark at Odyssey Theatre Ensemble For those who like to dine in the dark and want to take their theatre in the same fashion, head out to the Odyssey Theatre’s show this weekend, which happens totally in the dark. It’s great for the sort of people that frequent plays, but even if you don’t compare your life to No Exit or quote Mamet as a part of regular speech you’ll have a great time (if you like being scared). Thespians go haunted in this intimate evening of screams that start at 8pm for $30, which is a lot cheaper than attending AMDA. Dim the lights here 2055 South Sepulveda Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90025 SATURDAY: Movie: Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon at the Aero When was the last time you watched a scary movie and were like “I could use more of that? Like, five times more?” It’s a rare occasion for us too, but why not savor the moment at the 7th Annual Dusk-to-Dawn at the Aero Theatre. Featured this year are favorites Hellraiser, Motel Hell (not to be confused with Gordon Ramsay’s new show Hotel Hell, also scary), The Devil’s Rain, Christine, The Living Dead of Manchester Morgue, and the Manitou. It’s $20, but that’s like $80 cheaper than a hotel room and it comes with free food and giveaways. Yeah. Think about it. Go goth here 1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403 Music: Screamin’ Jay Hopkins Halloween Tribute Show at Historic Monument 157 Dance into the night at a budget friendly Halloween extravaganza that takes place in an old Victorian mansion with musical tributes to Screamin’ Jay Hopkins. Show starts at 8pm with a $10 recommended donation at the door. The evening features performances by Tommy Santee Klaws, Dorian Wood, Speedybug USA, VUM, Amanda Jo Williams, and RT n’ the 44′s and will be decorated in the style of tiki/voodoo graveyard with dancing, costumes, a coffin and an onstage toilet (what!)? 3110 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90031 Other: Dia de Los Muertos at Hollywood Forever Cemetery If you’re a dead-head (the other kind), participate in the biggest Dia celebration at LA’s Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where this year the Mayans are en vogue. The festival features the musical stylings of Ozomatli, Aztec ritual dance, 100+ altars, food vendors, arts and crafts, and a grand procession. Be sure to bring $10 cash in exact change to appease the gods (and get yourself in) in a day you can finally get your masks out for (or your DVD copy of 2012 as a pregame). 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038 SUNDAY: Movie: Clue and Costume Ball at Electric Dust Drive-In It’s opening night at Electric Dust Drive-In, and they’re kicking off with Clue and a costume ball. It’s a great film that won’t horrify you (unless you’re afraid of Tim Curry, we get it). Carhops will bring you food as you enjoy a nearly extinct entertainment on this retro downtown roof amongst the city lights. The mystery begins at 7:30 and will cost you $10 online. Be strategic – tickets are cheaper when you buy earlier 240 W. 4th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013 Music: Cult of Youth at Los Globos Go see a band that Pitchfork loves the crap out of this Sunday night at Los Globos. In a weekend brimming with DJs and pricey Halloween love, maybe you just want to dance in a seedy nightclub on the cheap to a non-mashup Top 40, and we’re all about that. These psychedelic neo-folkers play alongside Pure Ground, Jackladder & The Dreamlanders, and SURVIVE. The show starts at 9 and tickets are $10, which is like getting a $3 t-shirt at Disneyland (Halloween in Disneyland = expensive, Los Globos is $3 souvenir t-shirt cheap). Join a cult here 3040 W Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90029 Other: Schtick or Treat at Taix If you like your candy mixed with a side of laughs, then go check out some comedians impersonating other comedians at Schtick or Treat at Taix. That’s right, at 8:30 on Sunday, you can check out a totally free show where comedians do short sets as other people. That idea in itself sounds kind of creepy, and it’s just in time for Halloween. Besides, where else could you check out Aziz and Kristen Schaal for free? We personally look forward to hearing a lady do Bill Cosby jokes (hopefully while clad in a Bill Cosby sweater). 1911 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026

We realize that sometimes the weekend starts on a Friday night while your paycheck inconveniently arrives direct deposit on Monday morning.
Haunted Hollow, 603 N. Las Palmas Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90004

1. House at Haunted Hill: This high octane haunted attraction in Woodland Hills is full of special effects, humor, music, and video projection actors that people say resembles Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Just leave those ashes at home.

October 26th-31st, 7pm-10pm (open late opening weekend), FREE

1. Halloweentime at Disneyland: There isn’t a more perfect place on a holiday than Disneyland. They don’t just decorate. They go all out, changing rides around, and making sure that your favorite Disney lights, and sounds, have an eerie (but friendly) glow.

Runs nightly through Halloween, tickets are $87

It’s pretty much the same deal as the zoo, only there are now exotic fish involved, and the fish are (probably) not in costume. Magic shows will be had, as well as coloring contests, storytelling, and underwater pumpkin carving. That’s right.

PRETTY SCARY SH*T:

You have a darker edge to you, and wish Benicio Del Toro acted in romantic comedies. Here are some popular places where you can pay to get scared.

3. Pierce College Haunted Corn Maze: Though pricey for a short attraction, the corn maze is a great addition to some of the neighboring Halloween houses in Woodland Hills. Opinions are mixed as to whether it is scary or not, but I’m pretty sure I cried like a Titanic-bound tenth grader (scared sh*tless).

Open every night through Halloween except October 22, 10am-10pm (12am F/S) General Entry is $5, Maze is $13

Pierce College Haunted Corn Maze, 20800 Victory Blvd, Woodland Hills, CA 91367

2. Hellbreak LA: How many times have you driven past that creepy shut down Sears building on Santa Monica Boulevard and thought it would be a great location for a scary movie? The Sears building has been transformed into a post-apolcalyptic prison where “experiments” are taking place.

Runs through Halloween daily 7pm-1am (opens 2pm Halloween). Get your $35 tickets here

Old Sears Building, 5601 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

1. Haunted Hayride: Explore the “powerful hand of cults” on this year’s Haunted Hayride that weaves its way through Griffith Park into the pitch black night.

Runs through Halloween, schedule here, $28 tickets here

Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Springs Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027

EVEN SCARIER SH*T:

You watch Guillermo Del Toro and still think “it would have been so much better if there were exploding bloody doll heads and John Lithgow made a cameo” (scariest sh*t we could think of).

3. Blumhouse: Horror movie buffs delight in this haunted house put on by the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious. It takes place in a theater that once housed “dark art magicians”. They also put on a less scary daylight tour for kids (or for grown up kids like me).

Schedule varies,$32 with advanced purchase

Blumhouse of Horrors, 940 S Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90017

2. Delusion: It would be a shame not to mention the NPH (that’s Neil Patrick Harris for those of you trapped under a rock in a decade-long version of 127 hours) produced Delusion, a haunted play that is supposed to be out of this world scary (and maybe, a little bit fashionable). Tickets are currently sold out, but beg your friends and check Craigslist!

Sold out, get tickets through friends or favors

Delusion, 2218 S Harvard Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018

1. Blackout Haunted House: Based on what we heard, this could, hands down, be the scariest haunted house in America. You must enter alone. People stick fingers in your mouth. You cannot talk, only scream. You have to wear a protective mask and carry a flashlight. It seems really gross, and nasty, and terrifying, and you probably shouldn’t go unless you want to pay for therapy, or you’re already paying for therapy because you’re into this kind of thing.

Starts the 20th and runs through Halloween, times vary, tickets are $35 school nights, $45 weekends and Halloween

FRIDAY Movie: (500) Days of Summer at Front Porch Cinema Even though it’s officially autumn, Front Porch Cinema lends proof that Summer never fades. (500) Days of Summer is a love story to LA, bringing to life the charm of places that aren’t always a dance explosion in the street (complete with animated birds). It’s funny, it’s sweet, and it showcases Downtown LA in a picturesque manner, complete with really adorable people, great haircuts, and a drunken karaoke scene (at pirate-themed Redwood Bar). Free music starts at 6pm on the Santa Monica Pier, while the Belle and Sebastian level love fest is at 7:30pm. We can only hope for a sequel where Joseph Gordon Levitt has just broken up with by Autumn and meets January Jones. 100 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401 Music: Nue Bluez Barrelhouse Juke at the Last Bookstore Are you tired of your regular concert routine? Get over to the Last Bookstore on Friday for book infused blues at one of our favorite bookstores ever. The evening features local blues players that have graced Babe’s & Ricky’s and the Living Room, so get lost in a book nook and find yourself in the whimsical labyrinth (literal and not) of knowledge that is the Last Bookstore. While you’re getting lost, check out some free Friday music. 453 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90013 Other: Halloween @The Barn at the Hollywood Heritage Museum Hidden LA and Creepy LA are joining forces this year to do what they do best to create a fun (and educational) evening at the Hollywood Heritage Museum. Get spooked on knowledge in the renovated museum version of one of Hollywood’s first studios in an evening full of guest speakers featuring Tom Ogden (author of Haunted Hollywood/Magic Castle magician) and several others. The event is hosted by Scott Michaels, creator of LA’s famed Dearly Departed tours. A Hollywood Horror photo booth, a hands-on paranormal investigation, screenings of ghost themed short subjects, and food and drinks creep their way into the night. Tickets are $25 plus a small service charge, and there are two time slots throughout the evening (7pm and 9pm). The dead can’t eat, so they binge on knowledge 2100 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90068 SATURDAY Movie: Dawn of the Dead at Cinespia We can’t think of a more fitting movie to watch while literally surrounded by the dead. A pre-Walking Dead George Romero zombie infused evening of guts begins at 7pm. It’s about seeking refuge from zombies in an abandoned shopping mall, or as we like to think of it: Black Friday (the Movie: based on true stories). This is so not (500) Days of Summer. Zombies live a lot longer than that. Eat your heart out 6000 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038 Music: Cold Cave at Saturdays off the 405 If you feel like brooding or you just like pretending to brood, check out the Cold Cave show at the Getty this weekend as a part of their Saturdays off the 405 concert series. Cold Cave is headed by Wesley Eisold, who uses his background in hardcore punk to infuse his electro pop with angst. But really, it’s just an excuse to have a glass of wine while the sun sets over the Getty. The free concert starts at 6pm, but get there early to meander in the gardens. Getty Center: 1200 Getty Center Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90049 Other: Masquerade Ball at the Egyptian When a movie theater turns ninety years young, you don’t give it a cake (movie theaters don’t eat cake). No. You throw it a masquerade ball, which is precisely what the Egyptian is doing this weekend. The evening features films of the 20′s, a speakeasy gambling den, tours of the Egyptian’s private spaces, a 1920′s fashion parade, burlesque, and more. The 20′s commence begins at 6:30pm, and men and women are kindly guided to dress in 20′s costumes (that’s 1920-1929, not Forever 21). We can’t do the math, but in the 20′s, your $25 ticket could’ve bought you a house. Right? 6712 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028 SUNDAY Movie: The Bride of Frankenstein at Old Town Music Hall Take a mini road trip to El Segundo’s Old Town Music Hall this Sunday to get old school with The Bride of Frankenstein in the home of the Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ. The movie starts at 2:30pm, giving you ample beach time before and happy hour time after your $8 (at the door) juant with Frank. 140 Richmond Street, El Segundo, CA 90245 Music: Chelsea Wolfe at Amoeba If you like her earlier stuff, or even if you don’t, the tracks we’ve cued off of Chelsea’s newly released acoustic album are just superb. The best part is, you don’t even need to pay to check it out (though you’ll want to after): Amoeba loves gifting on Sundays with their free in-stores, and you can hear the music of an artist they describe as “elemental, intense, radiant, ancient yet modern, intimate yet expansive, dark and sparkling”. Chelsea with dazzle you with song at 5pm. 6400 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028 Other: Brewery Artwalk in Downtown LA Explore the grounds of an old PBR brewery that is now the ever mysterious (at least to us) Brewery Art Complex with this weekend’s Brewery Artwalk. This space is only open to artists for work and play except for twice a year when locals are given the opportunity to check out the work of over 100 artists, interact with them about their work, and purchase art. Event runs Saturday and Sunday 11am-6pm and entrance to the artistic mecca is FREE. 2100 North Main Street, Unit A10, Los Angeles, CA 90031

Things to do in Los Angeles this Weekend FRIDAY Movie: Exit Through the Gift Shop at Front Porch Cinema This is the documentary that made Banksy a household name in the sort of households that would watch an Academy nominated movie about street art. Learn about the clash and controversy surrounding Banksy and Mr. Brainwash, and see the faces (except B) behind artists whose works sprinkle throughout Melrose and La Brea. Santa Monica, the city of summer’s never over, starts the party with music at 6 PM, and a totally free screening at 7:30. You can even rent old time-y lawn chairs to feel like you’re on your very own front porch, drinking lemonade and re-reminding yourself why “life is beautiful”*. *not obscure, street art reference Get tagged at: 200 Santa Monica Pier, Suite A.Santa Monica, CA 90401 Music: M (Oohla L.A. Festival) at the El Rey Have a French Friday by participating in the Oohla L.A. French music festival over at the El Rey. Headlining tonight is M, and from what we’ve heard from him, he’s a catchy, dance-y, wears awesome glasses kind of a chap with music inspired by the Black Keys and Mr. Jimi Hendrix. He’s basically the PSY of French music. Their music sounds nothing alike. I just mean they’re both popular and appreciate rad glasses. Hopefully you do too. If you don’t like glasses, you shouldn’t go. French music is sexy 5515 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 Other: ArtNight Pasadena in Downtown Pasadena Pasadena goes all artsy this weekend with ArtNight Pasadena, an evening full of free shuttle filled gallery hopping. That’s right, you can park in Pasadena, have a few glasses of wine, and someone will chauffeur you from gallery to gallery so that you don’t even have to worry your Goodwill $11 ivory heels, or whatever shoes you would wear to some sort of art event so that you seem cool but down to get down with art. Here’s a PDF of where it’s happening SATURDAY Movie: Metropolis at LACMA On a recent visit to LACMA, we found ourselves enthralled by German Expressionism and the Tim Burton-ness of clips from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, then found ourselves fascinated by the art related to Metropolis, which LACMA is conveniently playing this Saturday night. This 1927 classic mastered by Fritz Lang is a dystopian epic that portrays life in 2026 through a pacificist and her evil double. That’s only 14 years, from now, so we better watch it to see what life has in store for us. Hopefully not German anarchy. Tickets are $10, and movie starts at 7:30 in the Bing Auditorium. Get culture here 5905 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90036 Music: David Byrne and St. Vincent at The Greek With a line-up like David Byrne and St. Vincent at the Greek, how could you ever miss it? Even if you’re an “actor out of work”, we highly suggest making friends with someone at Ticketmaster and getting into this concert that starts in the hills of Los Feliz at 7:30. Get saintly here 2700 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Other: Rebel Bingo at Undisclosed Location If you haven’t been before, these cool-as-Jean-Ralphio Brits come to LA and throw an underground rager at an undisclosed location filled with smoke, dancing, marker body art, and some bingo too. Freddy Fortune seduces the crowd as the night’s ringleader, and the frenzy of bingo and steady flow of alcohol turns it into a carnival of fun that started a few years ago when Fortune and his friends made up a more grown up version to bingo in an old church in England. Come in clothes that can get marker on them and be ready for anything and everything. You might get hash-tagged with a marker, someone will probably draw whiskers on your face, and you’ll likely wake up hung over and indulging in a huge stack of pancakes at Swingers the next morning, but it’s more than okay. It’s “rebel f*cking bingo”. Tickets as of now are $10, so buy them quick before they go up again. Pay to dance somewhere SUNDAY Movie: The American Scream at Cinefamily We’re eager to check out this Halloweeny doc from the creators of Best Worst Movie. We’re so into those crazy haunted houses, but we’re always starving to know more about the people that set them up (anyone else see the house that sprouted purple spider legs yet?). We know it’ll be an engaging and spirited psych study that starts at 7 PM, where tickets will run you $12 dollars. Scream like a Magic Mountain-bound tween here 611 North Fairfax Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90036 Music: Where the Wild Things Are at Walt Disney Concert Hall If you’re feeling like shelling out some cash this weekend in the name of that oh-so-popular “happiest place on earth” inventor that makes you spend like Tracy Morgan … Jordan … Morgan … You should definitely head over to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where Dudamel brings to life the children’s book (because it was that first) into a one act opera directed by Netia Jones. The performance features innovative technologies, your favorite little monsters, and some guy dressed as a Wild Thing that looks a little like a cast member of Cats. But really, it looks awesome, and we’re always looking for an excuse to dress nice and get Disney-ed. The show starts at 2 pm, but it does run all weekend in case you killed it at Rebel Bingo last night (and by it, we mean your liver). Go wild here 111 S. Grand Ave., b/t W. First & W. According to their website, Courtney Cox has been in attendance, so maybe that’s where she got him some of those decorative large scale knick knacks. This weekend, head down to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar to peruse some high end antiques from 60 international exhibitors. We’re expecting oversized sculptures that we could never fit through our tiny front door, none of that cheap fountain, garden rock, “home is where the heart is” type stuff. Tickets are $20, and the event starts at 11 am.
