A Visit to the Mad Men Era: No Time Machine Needed
Days without Mad Men can be devastating. Maybe you try to get your fix by listening to an A capella group perform the theme song “A Beautiful Mine” on YouTube next to your cat Snickers, who doesn’t seem to understand your fascination with Don Draper. Maybe you and Snickers paw through your cabinets to try the Betty Francis diet out: just add ranch. Maybe you purchase off-brand ketchup from Trader Joe’s because thinking of Heinz, “the only ketchup,” makes you too nostalgic. Instead of getting all droopy-eyed like Pete Campbell over Rory Gilmore, why not hold a scotch on the rocks at some Los Angeles watering holes that have been used as actual shooting locations on the show? These smooth sixties lounges and restaurants have been host to unforgettable Mad Men moments, because the very best moments involve liquor. That’s why the whole show is so good.
#4. Casey’s Irish Pub
If you’ve always wanted to visit the P.J. Clarke’s that you saw on Season 1, Episode 8 (The Hobo Code) after Peggy celebrates her writing successes, you’re just in luck, because it’s actually Casey’s Irish Pub in Downtown Los Angeles. Casey’s was also featured in the Season 2 premiere For Those Who Think Young, as the bar that Don goes to after his doctor has just told him to cut down on the juice. Inside of Casey’s, Don asks that hipster professor type what he’s reading, and the hipster professor type thinks Don so wouldn’t be into it. Casey’s, which has served locals as a pub for the last thirty years, was originally opened in 1916 as a General Store/ Turkish Bathhouse (those were the days) and went through several transitions, finally undergoing a transformation by the imaginative minds that did the Ghirardelli Square. Stop by for Happy Hour like the Irish do from 11-12am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or over a weekend with friends to revel in Casey’s Irish Whiskey menu, craft beers, and beer concoctions like a Snakebite (Stella and Cider).
